Field Data

Below are just a few examples of the countless situations in which Domite® has proven to be the premium abrasion and impact resistant material available.

Example Study 1transfpt

Trial:  Cost per ton of copper produced over a period of ~18 months

Location:  Canada’s largest open pit mine.  In pit crusher, transfer point, discharge feeder to conveyor tail.

Conditions:  Hard rock, base metal ore.

Average Size: 600 mm (24”).

Drop: 8 m (26 ft).

Temp Range: -20C – +32C

Data:  Original Skirtboards made from 2” thick 500 BHN Abrasion Resistant Overlay Plate Domite® Skirtboards made from 1” thick Domite® on ¼” mild steel backing plate.

Records: Maintenance reported on – time to change Skirtboards, cost of new Skirtboards, tonnage of ore passing over Skirtboards.

In addition to Domite’s® cost being lower per ton, the real savings is in the fact that the Domite® Skirtboards need to be changed only once every 4 months as opposed to once every 2 weeks.  This now frees up maintenance crews, simplifies scheduling and increases productivity.

Example Study 2

Application: Large double dump hopper walls lined with Domite® plates in areas subjected to the most severe wear and impact built to handle the extremely abrasive Athabasca Oilsands.

Results:  With a targeted life of 2 years, after 26 months measured wear is < 1/3 the thickness of the abrasion resistant wearing surface of the Domite®.

Example Study 3Dump-Bucket-data

Application:  Trial was conducted on a Caterpillar 992C large loader bucket. Data:  1” 425 HB AR Plate with a hard face weld Overlay pattern was used  to protect bolts on the upper lip.   1” Domite® on ¼” Mild Steel was placed in-front of the bolts.

Results:  The Overlay averaged 600 operating hours between changes.  Domite® averaged 4000 operating hours between changes.

During a separate trial at the same location the following data was obtained from a 72” Aisco Feeder for raw ore.

These were material costs only, labour and savings in downtime were not considered.  Original ½” CHT 425 plates gave 6-7 months life.  Current experience is 2 – 2 ½ years life from Domite® Plates

Typical Data Numbers:

  • Domite® life is 50% greater than that of Ni Hard Irons.
  • At least 7 times longer than A.R. type steels 360/400 BHN
  • 5 times the wear rate of Manganese Steel
  • 3 times the wear rate of Tapco Weld Hardfacing
  • 4 times the wear rate of Astralloy-Vulcan
  • 16 times the wear rate of Carbon Steel
  • 3 times the wear rate of 500 BHN A.R. Plate

The following data was obtained from Mine Truck Bed Liners over a 6 month interval.
