Trial Bolt Protectors on a Cat 992C Loader

At an open pit base metal mine, 1", 425 HB AR Plate with a hard face weld overlay pattern was used to protect bolts and the upper lip of a large loader. These can be seen behind the bolts on the left side of the bucket.

They would last an average of     600 operating hours   between changes.

As a trial, 1 1/2" Domite^® (1 1/4" on a 1/4" mild steel backing) was set into recesses cut into the AR Plate. These can be seen in front of the bolts.

The trial plates were removed after 2,750 operating hours. The front edges started as a reasonably sharp corner and rounded off nicely as it wore, with no evidence of chipping or spalling. The Domite was still 1" thick and mine maintenance personnel felt this approach would easily provide 6,500 + operating hours between changes.
